Hello, welcome to the first installment of Trevor's Countdown! I suppose I should make the first one great, but if it’s too great there will be expectations to live up to...In case you don’t know me, my name is Trevor (as I have previously said...I’m repeating myself) owner of Real World POV. I’m here to give you, my personal Top 5 countdown of different aspects in different theme parks. Without further ado, here are my Top 5 Roller Coasters from few Cedar Fair Park’s (Carowinds, Kings Island, and King’s Dominion). 5. Carolina Cyclone (Carowinds) This bright yellow and light blue coaster will catch your eye, as it’s hard to not pay attention to people screaming as they corkscrew around the tracks suspended above your head. This ride is very smooth, and on one of the most crowded days of the year (4th of July) I managed to wait no more than 20 minutes to ride. You are inverted 4 times, twice in a loop and twice through a corkscrew. The ride isn’t very long, and the car sets you very low to the track. Worth the 20 minute wait, as it sets in to our list at number 5. 4. Vortex (Kings Island) This ride has been running strong for more than 20 years, and it hasn’t lost it’s flair. This orange and blue coaster sends you upside down 6 times! As if that isn’t enough, you drop from almost 150 feet up, hitting max speeds of 55 mph. This is a fantastic coaster if you aren’t yet completely comfortable with large coasters (this was my first large coaster). Get ready to loop, twist, and boomerang your way through the old track and feel like a child again...unless you are a child, in which case you will feel like you normally do. - These last three are very hard to choose, as they all offer extremely unique experiences that strike a bit of fear into you. 3. Volcano (King’s Dominion) That name doesn’t sound too intimidating, so let’s use the full name - Volcano: The Blast Coaster. This inverted coaster does exactly what you would expect it to...It blasts you out of a volcano. That’s right, that giant volcano towering over everything (except its neighbor, the Intimidator 305) that looks like it’s under construction is a functional ride. Because of all the track and support beams, it appears to be a big mess. A big, awesome mess. You slowly roll out of the station and don’t even come to a stop before you are launched 70 mph into the bright sun. You haven’t really gone anywhere yet, so you curve back around and get launched again...This time at a 90 degree angle, straight up and out of the volcano, greeted at the top with a small explosion of fire. You are inverted 4 times through corkscrews, but you are still in awe at how quickly you got 150 feet up in the air. 2. Intimidator 305 (King’s Dominion) Pictures and video do not do this roller coaster justice. At all. The reason being that it is so huge, you have to take the picture from so far away to fully capture it. The Intimidator 305 is the world’s fastest gravitational coaster, meaning all of it’s speed is caused by gravity, rather than a launch sequence. This giant, beaming red coaster is one of the tallest cable lift coasters in the US. You are lifted up 305 feet into the air, and drop at top speeds of 90 mph. In the off season, this ride literally has zero wait...Which is why I rode it 5 times back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back, which by the way is not a wise thing to do after you have downed a nice funnel cake. There are no inversions in this Giga Coaster, but you wouldn’t even know if there were. The (big) thrill is the drop, and they keep it simple and to the point. 1. Nighthawk (Carowinds) - This ride really only beat out the Intimidator 305 because it offers a very unique thrill - you are laying on your back. You can only find this coaster in three other places IN THE WORLD. This coaster does often have large lines. I waited 75 minutes on the 4th of July, and it was worth every minute. You sit backwards in the seat, and as soon as you strap in the seats recline so that you are laying on the track. At times you are flipped onto your stomach, and it is the most amazing feeling in the world, aside from the fact you feel like you are going to fall out and land flat on the pavement 100+ feet below. There are actually five inversions, but you only notice the loop in the beginning. Reaching a top speed at 50 mph, this ride is just fantastic. So, there’s my Countdown.
